Overview

The procedure by which a man donates his semen – the fluid that is released during ejaculation which contains sperms is called sperm donation. The donated sperms help an individual or a couple conceive a baby.

These donated sperms are injected into the women’s reproductive organs or used to fertilize mature eggs in a lab. Third-party reproduction is the one in which donated sperms are used.

The sperm donator can be known or anonymous to the recipient. When sperm donations are made known to the recipient, it is called directed donations. Before one donates sperm, he will be checked for medical conditions and other risk factors. Its also important to understand the psychological, emotional and legal issues associated with sperm donation.

Why Sperm donation?

Sperm donation is done to help an individual or a couple to get pregnant. It helps people who are unable to conceive that is a woman who doesn’t have a partner or a couple who are experiencing male infertility.

If you donate your sperm, you are likely to get paid for each donation that passes the sperm bank screening process. The payment made is to compensate for your time and any related expenses.

Risks

There are no risks found to be associated with the donation of sperms.

How will you prepare?

If you are planning on donating your sperm, you should be mindful of the long-term impact it will have on your life. If you are planning on an anonymous donation, you should consider the following

Semen Testing: You will be asked to provide several semen samples. You will also be asked to abstain from ejaculation either through sex or masturbation for at least 48 to 72 hours, before giving each sample.

Genetic Testing: A blood sample will be analyzed to check if you are a carrier for any genetic diseases. Ask individual banks about the tests they perform, because some banks perform more extensive tests.

Family Medical History: You should provide a medical history for at least two previous generations of your family. History will suggest the presence of hereditary diseases. If there are any present, you might be rejected from donating sperms.

Psychological Evaluation: You will be asked if you are worried about sharing your personal information with your biological children or about future contact with them. If you are donating to someone you know, you should talk about your relationship to the recipient. If you have a partner, you will be advised to counsel him or her.
